D.Holic’s Debut and Golden Era
D.Holic debuted on October 23rd, 2014, with the release of their first single “I Don’t Know” and the digital single “D.Holic Dark With Dignity.” The group debuted under Star Road Entertainment (formerly H.Mate Entertainment) and consisted of five original members: Rena, Hami, Nine, Danbi, and Duri.
The group showed a distinctive music style as their song represents a slow-tempo but not quiet ballad song. In the midst of all the dancing girl groups, D.Holic stood out fresh with the great vocal talents that all the members seemed to possess. Their music has also got quite some influence from mash-up between Korean and American 90s style. We can also hear the rap and ad-lib part that makes the song more enjoyable. With minimal dances and stunning vocals, the group was enchanting on many levels. Sadly, the group’s debut didn’t meet a lot of commercial success, though they gained 19.000 views on their YouTube channel. A few of the comments also mentioned how they love the group and how this group is so underrated: “Most underrated girl group!” “This M/V should have more views, they are so underrated.. So sad,” “I’ve been a huge fan since your debut… I was stationed in Korea and saw you on TV and fell in love instantly… keep making amazing music ladies…화이팅!” “I love you D.holic. Please stay with us <3 fighting!” “I hope you gain more fans 🙆💖 You’re amazing!” “Anthem of my life, one of my favorites debuts,” Since then, the group has been consistently maintaining their style and feminine sexuality through the release of addictive songs, such as “Chewy” and “Murphy and Sally.”
In “Chewy,” the group displayed a medium tempo dance song that will remind you of Middle Eastern-ish style music. The girls also displayed their feminine charms as they danced with slow but certain moves. The music was simple and addictive, the best of them yet for the summer vibe. The song also has easy and repetitive lyrics such as: And it also rhymes in some parts: Overall, the song is a summer bop. My eyes keep going to you My hands keep going to you My feet keep going to you I am already being pulled to you
While “Chewy” and “I Don’t Know” are slower, “Murphy and Sally” is more energetic. In these songs, rather than their usual sexy and feminine style, the girls display their bubbly and bright charm. The song’s intention is to cheer the listeners as can be seen by its enthusiastic lyrics: In total, the group has released one mini-album, Chewy (2015), and three single albums: D.Holic Dark With Dignity (2014), Murphy & Sally (2015), and Color Me Rad (2016), throughout their career. Although they didn’t really hit famous milestones, all of their songs are really enjoyable.
Member Formation
Throughout their journey, the group has made several changes in their formation. At first, the group originally debuted with five members: Rena, Hami, Nine, Danbi, and Duri. But along the way, the group underwent an in and out members in their line-up. Nine was the first who left the group in August 2015. Her departure was quite sudden and was only stated that it was due to personal reasons. The last event that she went to as a member of the group was the 2015 Peace & Friendship concert in Tokyo, Japan, where the group had a signing with 200 fans afterward. A new member named Hwajung then replaced Nine as the vocalist. Then, the new line-up released “Murphy and Sally” a few months after, in November 2015. Then, in July 2016, Danbi and Duri also decided to leave the group and a new member EJ later joined the group. EJ joined the group with a strong impression as she was introduced by wearing a mask and pink hair that differentiated her from any girl. Together, the new line-ups made a return with the release of their fourth single “Color Me Rad” and even held their comeback showcase on July 6th, 2016. The new member EJ said on their showcase, “To be honest, I still can’t believe it now. I was so nervous I couldn’t even think. I was so anxious. A lot of things changed once I became a member. I’m wearing hot pants for the first time. I don’t usually wear short things. This is also the first time I’ve dyed my hair pink.” On their showcase, the group also spoke about how they didn’t have a leader since their original leader departed from the group. Hami said, “We currently have no leader. The leader gets so much stress, doesn’t she? That’s why we promised that we would all have the responsibility.” Hami also spoke about how she and Rena were the only original members left from the group. She said, “There were member changes two times. Among the original members, there’s only Rena and me. I wavered sometimes and even thought that I could not go with my first intentions. Rena and I cried together and had many times of frustrations while practicing. Honestly, I even thought that an album might not come out. There were times I felt my heart go cold when I went to the practice room. However, we were lucky we were able to sign on EJ. We will fight on even more. I believe that better things will happen to balance out how hard it was.” Sadly, not even a year after their comeback, the group underwent a third line-up change. Hami and Hwajung both decided to leave the group in February 2017, leaving only Rena as the original member. They were temporarily replaced with new members, Nayoung and Youjin, although they never officially joined and debuted with D.Holic. Then, in July 2017, EJ also decided to leave the group to pursue a modeling career. Therefore, Rena is the only remaining member from the original line-up. The original plan was that she would wait for a new line-up and re-debut the group. But late, the group was informally disbanded.

Disbandment
There has been a rumor going on that D.Holic would have to disband if their last comeback, “Color Me Rad” didn’t reach 1500 sales. This was said to be told by member Hwajung, before her departure from the group. It is said that the group was gonna disband because they were lacking money. It seems that the rumors were true since the group decided to disband later on. But perhaps, one of the impactful factors was the members’ line-up changes. Toward the end of the group’s career, three members out of four decided to leave the group, leaving only Rena as the only member in the group. The group’s disbandment was never announced to the public, but it is said that the group had informally disbanded due to lack of continuation and plan since the members left.
Member Future Activity
